Vietnam: 40 years of Doi Moi and 2045 vision

(PTOJ) - The Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics (HCMA) and the Australian Embassy in Vietnam jointly held a roundtable themed “Vietnam: 40 years of Doi Moi and 2045 vision”, on March 21, 2024, in Hanoi. Prof, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, President of Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council chaired and gave a speech at the roundtable.

More than 200 delegates from party agencies, government ministries, research institutes and academia, and representatives of the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and Australian experts attended.

The event is an integral part of a strategic research series supported by the Vietnam Australia Centre (VAC) to develop policy analysis and recommendations on key development issues to inform Vietnam’s strategic vision to 2045.

Speaking at the event, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, HCMA President, and Chairman of the Central Theory Council affirmed: After nearly 40 years of Doi moi (renewal), Vietnam has developed well from a centrally planned economy to a market mechanism; from a closed economy, Vietnam has become the 22nd largest trading partner globally; proactively and actively integrating comprehensively and deeply; promoting industrialization and modernization; approaching outstanding creative work unique of Vietnamese people. The country has achieved great historical significant achievements.

The HCMA President emphasised the significance of the Doi moi research series and highly appreciated the colloboration between Australian and Vietnamese experts. This demonstrates the strong political trust and commitment to knowledge exchange between both countries. “This colloboration will continue to strengthen the Vietnam-Australia relationship that has been built and nurtured over the past 50 years and is increasingly developing, especially the upgrade of the two countries’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”, he said.

The event includes plenary session and 03 parallel sessions with the topics: The global megatrends and public governance sector reform in Vietnam; Urbanisation and financial sector reform in Vietnam; Avoiding the middle-income trap and sustainable development.

The roundtable discussion summarized and evaluated the socio-economic development results that Vietnam has achieved through nearly 40 years of innovation; Draw lessons from experience and policy directions that can be inherited and promoted to continue successful development in the new period. At the same time, with the spirit of looking straight at the truth, the experts at the workshop frankly pointed out the limitations, weaknesses, and shortcomings that still exist in various fields, which are obstaches to the Vietnam’s development. The research results at the workshop are expected to be the inputs to serve the review of 40 years of the economic reforms in the 1980s and the drafting of the 14th National Party Congress documents.
